Section A: Early Phase of Malayalam Language:

  1. Various Theories: Discuss different theories regarding the origin of Malayalam, its connections to proto-Dravidian, Tamil, and Sanskrit languages.
  2. Relation between Tamil and Malayalam: Examine A. R. Rajarajavarma’s six theories on the relationship between Tamil and Malayalam.
  3. Pattu School: Define the Pattu School concept and analyze its early works like Ramacharitam, Niranam Works, and Krishnagatha.
  4. Linguistic Features: Explore Manipravalam in early and medieval works, and characteristics of folklore, Southern and Northern ballads, and Mappila songs.
  5. Standardisation of Malayalam: Discuss linguistic peculiarities in Pana, Kilippattu, and Tullal, and the contributions of missionaries to Malayalam’s standardisation.

Section B: Literary History:

  1. Ancient and Medieval Literature: Analyze Pattu literature, Manipravala works, and folk literature. Discuss Kilippattu, Tullal, and Mahakavya.
  2. Modern Literature—Poetry: Study Venmani poets, Kavitraya poets’ romanticism era, post-Kavitraya poetry, and modernism in Malayalam poetry.
  3. Modern Literature—Prose: Explore the development of prose genres in modern Malayalam literature, including drama, novels, short stories, biographies, and literary criticism.

UPSC CSE Malayalam Syllabus 2024 for Paper 2

Section A:

Unit 1: Study Ramacharitam’s Patalam, Kannassaramayanam’s first 25 stanzas of Balakandam, Unnunilisandesam’s Purvabhagam, and Mahabharatham Kilippattu’s Bhishmaparvam.

Unit 2: Discuss poems by Kumaran Asan, Vailoppilli, G. Sankara Kurup, and N. V. Krishna Variar.

Unit 3: Explore works by O. N. V., Ayyappa Panicker, Akkittam, and Attur Ravivarma.

Section B:

Unit 4: Study works by O. Chanthu Menon, Thakazhy, and O. V. Vijayan.

Unit 5: Analyze collections by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, N. S. Madhavan, and C. J. Thomas.

Unit 6: Discuss works by Kuttikrishna Marar, M. K. Sanu, and V. T. Bhatttathirippad.

This paper emphasizes first-hand reading of prescribed texts to test critical ability.
