National Overseas Scholarship Scheme – Objective
Through studying abroad for a Master’s or Doctoral degree, low-income students from the Scheduled Castes, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Landless Agricultural Laborers, and Traditional Artisans categories can improve their economic and social standing. This is made possible by the Central Sector Scheme of National Overseas Scholarships.
NOS Scheme – Scope
- The Program offers financial aid to the chosen applicants so they can pursue Master’s and Doctoral degrees in any subject at institutions or universities recognized by the government or other authorized body of that nation.
- The Scheme will provide 125 new prizes in each Selection Year, contingent on funding availability. The allocation of slots per category for the several groups that fall under the scheme’s scholarship eligibility will be as follows:

National Overseas Scholarship Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, at least 60% marks or equivalent grade in the qualifying examination would be required. In the case of Ph. D courses, the qualifying exam would be Master’s Degree and for Master’s Degree courses, the qualifying examination would be Bachelor’s Degree. In case a student has completed a Bachelor’s of Engineering after completing Diploma (Lateral Entry to 2nd year), percentage of marks obtained in Bachelor’s degree will be taken into account.
Age
Not more than 35 (Thirty-Five) years, as on the first day of April for selection year.
Family Income
Family Income should be less than Rs. 8,00,000/- (Rs. Eight lakh per annum)

Air Passage | a) The awardees shall be allowed to purchase air tickets (from nearest Airport to Hometown in India to the nearest place to the educational institution and back to India) from the three authorized travel agents viz. Balmer Lawrie & Company Limited (BLCL), Ashok Travels & Tours (ATT), Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) with the condition that the ticket purchased must be of economy / shortest route on date of booking.b) The choice of the travel agent for booking of the ticket is left open to the awardees. No Booking charges/ excess baggage/ cancellation charges & other add-ons will be reimbursed to awardees. c) The awardees will claim reimbursement of airfare from respective Indian Mission abroad after joining the University and providing joining report from the University. d) The conditions will be effective from 1st Jan 2022 e) Return tickets will be booked by Indian Mission abroad as per clause |
Duration of Award with Financial Assistance
The prescribed financial assistance will be provided up to the completion of the course/ research or the following period, whichever is earlier:
- Ph.D.: 4 years (Four years)
- Master’s Degree: 03 years (Three years)
The recommendation of the competent authority in the educational institution/university, as well as the Indian Mission abroad, certifying that such an overstay for a specified period is essential for facilitating the candidate to complete the course, is required before the stay beyond the prescribed period for levels of courses as mentioned above can be considered. This approval can be granted without any financial assistance of any kind, with the exception of the air passage to return to India. But the Government of India alone will have the last say in this matter.
NOS Scheme Selection Process
- For the academic year 2022–2023 only, candidates who have received unqualified admission offers from among the top 500 international colleges or universities are qualified for the grant.
- Candidates may reapply in the next round if they would like to switch courses or universities, but requests to switch institutions or universities will not be honored.
- Two rounds of selection will take place, with candidates chosen on the basis of merit lists derived from the most recent QS rankings of overseas universities and institutions to which they have received admission offers.
- Higher on the merit list are university offers that are ranked higher. Candidates’ positions in the event of a tie in the QS rankings are decided by their scores on the qualifying exam.
- A Selection Screening Board evaluates online applications and makes recommendations for qualified applicants for the scholarship. Up to 50% of the available seats are held for suitable candidates on a waitlist that is kept open until March 31st of the selection year.
- Letters of Provisional Award of Scholarship are given to chosen applicants who have been admitted to overseas colleges or universities.
- After the date on which the provisional award letter is issued, students may postpone their intake for a maximum of one year or two intakes; after that, the award is canceled.
- Within six months of the date the Confirmation of Award Letter was issued, awardees must fulfill all requirements, including document verification and the filing of bonds and solvency certifications, or else the award will be automatically canceled.
