World Environment Day 2024
Ecosystems are under threat worldwide. From forests and drylands to farmland and lakes, the natural spaces that humanity depends on are reaching a tipping point. According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 percent of the Earth’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 percent since 2000 – without urgent action, drought could affect more than three quarters of the world’s population by 2050.
History of World Environment Day
In 1972, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated June 5 as World Environment Day (WED). The first party with the slogan “Only one country” took place in 1973. During the following years, WED evolved into a platform to raise awareness of of problems affecting our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea level rise and food security. In addition, WED helps to change consumption habits and national and international environmental policies
World Environment Day 2024 Theme
Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). It is a call to protect and revitalize ecosystems around the world that are essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, World Environment Day 2024 will focus on restoring land, stopping desertification and increasing drought resistance under the slogan “Our Earth Our future. We are a #GenerationRestoration.” We can’t turn back time, but we can grow forests, restore water sources and bring back soil. We are the generation that can make peace with the earth.
The Year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. World Environment Day 2024 Theme has been decided as “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”. The sixteenth session (COP 16) of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, from 2nd to 13th December 2024.
