KVS Admissions 2024 – Eligibility Criteria

The age criteria for admission to Kendriya Vidyalayas are carefully defined for each class. It is a primary requirement that needs to be met for eligibility.

  • Class 1: The child must be 5 years old as of 31st March 2024 but not more than 7 years old. This means the child should be born between 1st April 2017 and 31st March 2019.
  • Class 2 to 8: There is no examination for admission to these classes. The age requirement increases progressively by one year for each subsequent class. For example, a child applying for Class 2 should be 6 but not more than 8 years old, and so on.
  • Class 9: Admission to Class 9 is based on an entrance exam. The candidate must have completed Class 8 from a recognized school.
  • Class 10: Students are not directly admitted to Class 10, except in rare cases of transfer from another Kendriya Vidyalaya with a transferable job.
  • Class 11: Admission to Class 11 is based on the marks obtained in Class 10 board exams. Different streams are offered, such as Science, Commerce, and Humanities, each with criteria based on CGPA or marks.
  • Class 12: Direct admissions to Class 12 are not usually entertained. Exceptions are made for KV students who must move due to parental transfers.

Other Criteria

  • For Government Employees: Priority is given to children of central government employees, defence personnel, and state government employees.
  • For Differently-Abled Candidates: There are specific provisions and reservations for differently-abled candidates, ensuring inclusive education opportunities.
  • Special Provisions: KVS admits children under special provisions like single girl child quota, children of KVS employees, children of service personnel killed in action, etc. These admissions are subject to the availability of seats and fulfilment of other criteria.
  • Distance from KV: Preference may be given to children residing near the KV to reduce the hardship of commuting.

Documentation

  • Birth Certificate: The birth certificate issued by the municipal authority or notified area council is mandatory for age proof.
  • Residence Proof: A proof of residence may be required to ascertain the child’s eligibility under the right KV sector.
  • Report Card and Transfer Certificate: For admission to Class 2 and above, the previous year’s report card and transfer certificate from the last school attended are required.
  • Category Certificate: Relevant certificates must be provided if applying under a specific reservation category.

Method of Admission & Selection

For Class 1 Out of the available seats for fresh admission, 25% shall be reserved for the Right To Education (Hereafter referred to as ‘RTE’), 15% shall be reserved for SC, 7.5% shall be reserved for ST, and 27% seats shall be reserved for “OBC- Non-Creamy Layer”. (Hereafter referred to as “OBC-NCL”). For Class II & VIII Admission tests shall not be conducted for admission from Class II to VIII, and admission may be granted to fill up the vacant seats within the class strength. For Class IX & XI The State Boards/ICSE/NIOS students may be considered for admission in class XI if vacancies exist after considering the KVS and CBSE students. For Class X & XII Fresh admissions to class X & XII, other than KV students, will be entertained subject to the availability of vacancies.

Selection Process

  • The selection for Class 1 admissions is typically done through a lottery system in case the number of applications exceeds the available seats.
  • For admissions to Class 2 onwards, priority is given to children of government employees, including transfers, and then opened to others based on the availability of seats.
  • For admission in Class 9, State Boards/ICSE/NIOS students may be considered for admission in Class XI if vacancies exist after considering the KVS and CBSE students, respectively.
