BRO Raising Day 2024
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) commemorated its 65th Raising Day on May 7, 2024, with a ceremony held in New Delhi. Esteemed dignitaries, including Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane, graced the occasion. The event provided a platform to recognize BRO’s remarkable contributions and achievements in infrastructure development amidst challenging terrains.
Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane commended BRO for its dedication despite adverse conditions, emphasizing its crucial role in national security and local development. He advocated for the adoption of advanced technology to expedite projects, stressing the importance of automation for enhanced efficiency. Additionally, he acknowledged BRO’s significant contributions during crises like the Silkyara Tunnel Collapse and its involvement in the Vibrant Villages Programme for overall development in border areas.
Director General, Border Roads Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, highlighted BRO’s nationwide impact and unwavering commitment to connectivity and security. He showcased BRO’s motto, “In the Silence of Our Great Mountains – Work Speaks,” illustrating its profound impact in remote regions.
The event featured the launch of a compendium on the Sela Tunnel and books such as ‘Oonchin Sadaken,’ ‘Path Pradarshak,’ and ‘Path Vikas.’ Defence Secretary conferred Excellence Awards upon BRO personnel and recognized women achievers, underscoring the contributions of Casual Paid Labourers.
BRO In Recent Years
Since its inception with just two projects in 1960, the BRO has evolved into a dynamic organization with 18 projects across 11 States and three Union Territories. It has emerged as a premier infrastructure construction agency, specializing in high-altitude and snow-bound areas.
Operating at altitudes of 9,000 to 19,000 feet along the Northern and Western frontiers, the BRO has constructed over 62,214 roads, 1,005 bridges, seven tunnels, and 21 airfields. Its endeavors extend beyond India’s borders, aiding friendly nations like Bhutan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, the BRO completed 125 infrastructure projects worth Rs 3,611 crore, including the prestigious Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. The organization is poised to embark on the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel, set to become the world’s highest tunnel at 15,800 feet.
With increased budgetary allocations, the BRO has bolstered its capabilities and expanded its operational footprint, facilitating critical projects and accelerating infrastructure development. Additionally, the BRO has championed gender equality and inclusivity, providing significant roles and opportunities to women personnel, exemplified by officers like Col Ponung Doming and Assistant Executive Engineer (Civ) Smt Nikita Chaudhary.
