- Establishment: Initially designated on December 29, 1993, by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly to coincide with the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
- Current Date: In December 2000, the UN General Assembly moved the date to May 22, commemorating the adoption of the Convention’s text on May 22, 1992.
